Museums in Paris: Musée Jacquemart-André

The Musée Jacquemart-André is a mansion located in the 8th arrondissement of Paris.  Spouses Nélie Jacquemart and  Édouard André built the mansion in 1875 as both a private residence and a place to showcase their art collection.  The mansion was transformed into a museum in 1913 following their deaths.

The art collection was excellent and wide-ranging.  Jean-Claude liked the Italian works in the collection, especially the works pictured below.

We were amused by the two Carlo Crivelli paintings below.

When we visited, the museum was hosting a temporary exhibition dedicated to Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershoi, a late 19th, early 20th century painter.  The works were simple scenes painted in muted colors.  While the mood of the paintings was depressing, Hammershoi made good use of light and shadow.

Some artists paint their mothers.  Portraits of them, that is.  Hammershoi's painting of his mother is reminiscent of the famous one of Whistler's mother, see below.

Thanks for visiting the Musée Jacquemart-André with us.
