Museums in Paris: Musée d'Orsay #9

The Musée d'Orsay is hosting an exhibition dedicated to the 19th-century French writer and art critic Joris-Karl Huysmans (1848-1907).

The exhibition focused on Huysmans' criticism of art during the late 1800's.  Huysmans praised modern art of the time that was an "unvarnished" reflection of modern life.

Below is a portrait of Huysmans at age 30, painted by French artist Jean-Louis Forain, whom Huysmans praised.

The exhibition featured numerous paintings that Huysmans either praised or deplored.  If you read the cards that accompany the next few paintings, you will see for yourself what Huysmans liked or disliked about the paintings.

While Huysmans had some choice words for the paintings above, he praised paintings that he liked.

The exhibition included several other paintings that Huysmans liked.

Thanks for visiting the Musée d'Orsay with us.
