Cage Fighting in Italy

Near our apartment is lovely public park.  It is large and full of trees.  The park has a small fountain, a play area for children, plus a merry-go-round.

In addition, the park has the circular cage pictured below.

What is it?  Well, we have a few theories.

Our favorite theory is the cage is for training cage fighters from a very young age.  The small cage in the park is like the much larger one pictured below.

Parents and nannies bring their bambini to the park and place them in the cage through a narrow slot.  Then, the rambunctious youngsters start knocking the stuffing out of each other.  The kids learn all the fundamental skills: spinning back kicks, hammer fists, and the always-fun-to-watch ground and pound.  If this theory is true, then in about 20 years, Italians will dominate cage fighting around the world.

If you have your own theory, please share it.

P.S.  In case you are wondering, the enclosure is for very young children learning to play Italy's national outdoor pastime, soccer.  The fence keeps the ball in play and on each side there is a small goal.  Who knew?
