Museums in Paris: Musée du Louvre #3

After visiting the Musée Delacroix, we decided to visit the Louvre to see some of Delacroix's monumental paintings.  The paintings are large, measuring about 9' high and 12' wide.

Here is a sampling of Delacroix's paintings hanging in the Louvre.  Enjoy.

Below is the Liberty study that we viewed in the Musée Delacroix.

Here is the finished work hanging in the Louvre.  The painting depicts a symbolic scene of the July Revolution in 1830, which overthrew King Charles X.  In the scene, Liberty carries the flag of the French Revolution and leads French citizens over a barricade.  You can see the Notre Dame cathedral in the background.

Pop Quiz:  What work of art did Delacroix's Liberty inspire?  (Answer below.)

Thanks for visiting the Musée du Louvre with us.

Answer:  If you guessed Bartholdi's sculpture Liberty Enlightening the World (1886), then you are correct.  The sculpture is more commonly known as the Statue of Liberty.
