The second museum that we visited in Strasbourg is an art museum, the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg.
As the name suggests, the museum, founded in 1973, has a fairly large collection of modern and contemporary art, dating from 1870 to the present. We enjoyed viewing the collection, which was extremely varied because it covers such a long time period of rapid change. We especially liked seeing works by artists from Strasbourg and the region, such as Jean Arp and Gustave Doré.
The museum is housed in a large modern glass building completed in 1998. The building sits next to the Ill river.
Here is a photographic tour of the works that we especially enjoyed viewing.
(According to the card accompanying the painting, Sisley's painting above was confiscated by the Nazi's and later recovered. It is being held by the museum without claiming ownership.)
During the period of German annexation of Alsace-Lorraine from 1871 to 1918, the city of Strasbourg was a showplace of German culture. During era of Arts Nouveau ("Jugendstil" in German), many houses in Strasbourg were decorated in the Arts Nouveau style. The museum's collection includes some artifacts from the era (1890-1914).

The museum features several works by Pablo Picasso, on loan from the Picasso Museum in Paris. Marie-Chantal especially liked the first one below.
The museum has a collection of works by Strasbourg native Gustave Doré, including the monumental painting below. It measures about 20' by 30'.
Jean-Claude was especially amused by one of the works of art. Check it out.

We enjoyed our visit to the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg.
Near the museum, we spotted some street art--images created with colored ceramic tiles. The works are by a street artist named Stork and the images include a stork head and red bill, or some other image augmented with a red stork bill. Check out.
Below are nine images we spotted along the wall of a building.
Pop Quiz: Identify the artist whose work inspired each image by Stork.
Scoring: 0 to 4 correct, keep trying. 5 to 6 correct, well done. 7 to 8 correct, you must be an art critic. 9 correct, you must have cheated.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Christmas market towns of Strasbourg and Colmar. Thanks for visiting both towns with us.
