Museums in Paris: Musée du Luxembourg #1

The Musée du Luxembourg is an art museum on the grounds of the Palais du Luxembourg and Jardin du Luxembourg

The museum hosts temporary exhibitions and we recently visited an exhibition featuring Les Nabis.

The Nabis are were a group of artists painting in France during 1888-1990.  They considered themselves avante-garde and were dubbed les nabis, a biblical word meaning prophet.  Thus, they were the prophets of modern art.  They took inspiration from Paul Gaugin and Paul Cézanne.

You might remember an earlier blog post about a temporary exhibition at the Musee d'Orsay featuring Paul Serusier's Le Talisman (1888).  That painting sparked the Nabis movement.  (Click here to view the earlier post.)

While the Nabis artists claimed to be part of the same movement, their paintings were varied in style and subject matter.

Without further ado, here is a sampling of Nabis artists and their paintings from the exhibition.

Thanks for visiting the Musée du Luxembourg with us.
