Traveling in France #3: Visiting Vichy, The Napoleon III Festival (Part 3 of 3)

The Napoleon III Festival in Vichy continues.

The Second Empire under Napoleon III was proudly militaristic, using the army and navy to expand its territory in Europe and beyond.  So, the festival featured many people dressed in military costumes.  The officers' attire was elegant.  Plus, their hats were amazing.

The festival included a military camp, complete with dining hall and hospital.

Chow time!

The nurses presented a short play.
The camp even included the gent pictured below.  He might look like the butcher, but he is actually the field surgeon.

The camp included some cannon that were shot throughout the day.  We jumped the first time we heard the very loud boom.

There was even a platoon of infantrymen that demonstrated their marching and shooting skills.

Of course, the festival would not be complete without the Emperor Napoleon III with Empress Eugénie (pictured below).

The irony of Napoleon III's reign is that his regime's militarism led to his downfall during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.

The army included some dubious characters.
