Desserts in France #1

According to fictional French chef Didier, what is the secret of life?

Well, a bakery in Brittany might have the answer.  During a recent visit to the seaside town of Saint-Malo in Brittany, we discovered the Kouign Amann.

What is it?  "Kouign Amann" are Breton words for butter cake.  The name is apropos because the recipe calls for a lot of butter:  1/3 butter, 1/3 sugar and 1/3 flour.

The Kouign Amann, created in the 1860's, has been called "the fattiest pastry in all of Europe".   The reputed creator was Yves-René Scordia.  We suppose that dessert lovers and cardiologists alike revere Monsieur Scordia.

Of course, we had to sample a Kouign Amann.  We warmed one in the microwave after we got home from the tour, and then slowly devoured its buttery sweetness.   The perfect dessert for a wintry day.
