The National Gallery of Art is a frequent stop during our travels around D.C. It is centrally located and it is home to art that we love to view.
During a recent visit, we visited an area of the museum that we had never visited. As we strolled through the Italian galleries, we imagined we were in back in Florence during Year 2. We saw masterpieces, like the many we saw in Florence and elsewhere in Italy. Below are photos of a few of the masterpieces.
During our time in Italy, we gained a great appreciation of glazed terracotta, especially those produced in Florence by the della Robbia family. Here is a great example by Andrea della Robbia.
Another great Florentine artist was Fra Angelico, a Dominican monk who spent most of his artistic career in Florence and nearby Fiesole.
Below is a marble sculpture in the "veiled" style. We saw similar sculptures in Naples and were amazed that stone could be carved to resemble a thin veil. The result is so realistic that you have to look closely to see that the veil is actually marble not cloth.
