Lost in Translation (Part 1 of 2)

The other day, Greg made a mistake reading the bus schedule.  Something got lost in translation.

Instead of arriving at our desired destination, we found ourselves on the far side of the city.  After de-bussing, we looked around and noticed a beautiful modern building.

The building, completed in 2011, is the new home of the Florence opera company.  We toured the grounds and lobby and saw some interesting things, including those pictured below.

From the world premiere of the Tom Hanks film Inferno, an oversized mask of Dante.  The premiere was premiered in the opera house since the film is set Florence. Dante's mask is featured in the film.  Some random hottie thinks the mask is cool.

Sculpture of five red horses, possibly from a past opera production.

In the lobby of the opera house, a quote from Verdi, the father of Italian opera.  A rough translation is:  "Theater is for the general public, as many people as possible. A full hall, nothing less, is the only evidence of a real success."

A sculpture by Corrado Cagli from a 1974 opera set.
The opera company has a full slate of operas for the approaching season, including La Boheme, Faust and The Magic Flute.  Since Greg likes opera in general and since Susan likes the costumes, we were happy to locate the opera house.  Perhaps it was fate, not accident, that placed us on the wrong bus that day.

A happy accident.

Next up:  Head banging music.
