Art in D.C.: George Washington University

Art is everywhere--in museums, on the street and even in some unexpected places.

We recently attended an event at Lisner Auditorium on the campus of nearby George Washington University.  In the basement of the auditorium, there is a spacious lounge adjacent to the restrooms.  On the walls of the lounge, we noticed some framed items that we assumed were ordinary posters.  We were mistaken.  Upon closer inspection, we discovered some original works of fine art by well-known artists.  A few of the paintings are pictured below.  

Artist Sam Gilliam is a member of the American art movement known as the Washington Color School.  The painting below showcases Gilliam's signature painting style. 

Another painting that caught our attention is pictured below.  At first glance, the painting seems completely abstract.  A closer look reveals the namesake of G.W. University atop his horse. 

Below are to two closeup shots of the painting--the head of the horse and the head of General Washington.

Another work of art that caught our attention was a cubist lithograph by Saul Steinberg.

In the work above, Steinberg faithfully emulates George Braque's style.  Greg supposes the work is a self-portrait showing Steinberg at work in his studio.
