And more of the tour.
Our guide Mar, an artist and long-time Manhattan resident, was very knowledgeable about street art in NYC. He mentioned that he has met many of the artists whose work we saw. So, he gave us a complete picture of what we saw during our tour.
We even learned a couple of terms that are new to us. One is "artivism", a conflation of art activism, meaning the use of art to convey information, perspective and opinion and to inspire and motivate. Another term is "going city-wide", referring to an artist who places street art in all five boroughs of NYC, not only in one neighborhood of one borough.

Here are some more photos from the three hour tour.
"I hold with those who favor fire" by stencil artist B.D. White (who happens to use a wheelchair) portraying activist Ai Weiwei speaking a Robert Frost line. |
The artwork pictured above is one of many on about 100 security gates in the Lower East Side, thanks to a program called 100 Gates (http://www.100gates.nyc/). |
From a distance, this wall does not look like a work of art. In fact, the wall, known as the Houston Bowery Wall, is home to an long-running series of murals like the one above. The first artist to paint the wall was Keith Haring and the wall is also called the Keith Haring Tribute Wall. Click here to learn more. |
Next up: Part 4
P.S. Here is a sample of Haring's work.
