What else is Provins known for?
Provins is known for its medieval ramparts.
The ramparts once surrounded the entire town. Some sections have been torn down and the stone reused for new buildings. Fortunately, large sections have been preserved and one section is currently being restored.
The ramparts are one important reason why Provins was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
The ramparts were part of the town's defenses from invaders. A dry moat provided a defensive buffer and the high rampart wall provided a daunting challenge. Crenelations along the top of the wall and narrow slits in the wall provided protection for archers and gunners. The towers along the wall allowed defenders to shoot down on attackers who managed to cross the dry moat and attempted to scale the wall.
Visitors can climb stairs and walk along the top of the ramparts.
