In the old section of Florence is a small square where we came across a strange contraption on display. Dating from the 11th Century, the contraption is a catapult of sorts and is called a springald.
The model on display is based on a design by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), who designed many large weapons. Earlier versions used a cross bow device to propel projectiles at a target. The da Vinci design uses gunpowder to shoot a thick wooden arrow with a metal tip or small cannon balls. Some photos and a description appear below.
