Our visit to the Tate Britain continues.
After several hours at the museum, we were getting ready to leave. Then, we noticed a sign pointing to Turner and Rothko. One the museum guides showed us to a huge wing of the museum that we almost missed. There, we found a very large collection of J.M.W. Turner paintings.
Turner is popular in England, his portrait is on the £20 note.
Below are some types of paintings for which Turner is well known.
The collection also includes some paintings for which Turner is less well known, like the impressionistic painting below.
Next to the Turner galleries was a surprise, a group of Mark Rothko paintings. Rothko was an admirer of Turner and wanted a set of his paintings hung near Turner’s.
In an another gallery nearby, we found a collection of paintings of the St. Ives school of painters, who were influenced by Rothko. Below is one painting that seems to be an homage to Rothko, albeit with brighter and more varied colors.
P.S. Even the café at the museum creates works of art. Check it out.
