Traveling in France #4: Reims Redux (Part 1 of 2)

Yesterday, we returned to Reims for a special event--the start of Stage 4 of the Tour de France.  

Reims is located in the Champagne region.  The Tour de France often passes through Reims and nearby Epernay.  About a decade ago, we saw a stage finish in Reims and a stage departure the next day in Epernay.

This year, Stage 3 passed through Reims and Stage 4 started in Reims.  So, we hopped on a train for the short ride to Reims to see the start.

When we arrived at the start area, we were surprised.  The spectacle is much bigger than in the past.  At 10:00, the caravan departed.  The caravan is a collection of 50+ parade-type vehicles promoting the many sponsors of the event.  The caravan rolled by slowly while all sorts of tchotchkes were thrown to the boisterous crowd.  Susan, who loves free stuff, snagged a few items.    

After the caravan departed, we strolled around the departure area to see the extensive fan zone.

In front of the city hall, fans could ride a stationary bicycle and receive a free t-shirt.

As Noon approached, the riders gathered at the start line, including the Yellow Jersey rider, Julian Alaphilippe, the first Frenchman to lead the Tour in four years.

Before the race starts, the riders gather near the start and they appear to be relaxed, chatting with teammates and other riders.

Whenever we see the riders in person, like the ones pictured below, we are surprised by how trim they are.  They are very slender and lean.  We suppose that television really does add ten pounds.

After the departure, we enjoyed the tastes and sights of Reims.
