Traveling in France #3: Visiting Vichy, The Napoleon III Festival (Part 1 of 3)

Our visit to Vichy continues.

Since 2008, Vichy has hosted the annual Vichy Fête Napoléon III, a celebration of life in Vichy during the 1860's when the French Emperor Napoléon III twice visited Vichy.

The festival is like a Renaissance festival in the U.S., with period costumes, food, music and activities.

Maire-Chantal and her friend enjoyed looking at the ladies' fashions of the time.  A temporary exhibition displayed many fashionable dresses.

So, how do they make those dresses so billowy.  Check out the contraption pictured below.

Of course, a lady needs all sorts of accessories.  Here is a sampling.

In case you needed a parasol, you could purchase a handmade parasol at one of the booths.

Wherever we strolled, we saw many people in elegant period clothing.

The festival hosts a ball on the last night.  Guests wear period costumes for the event.  In case you don't have the appropriate attire in your closet, you can rent what you need, including one of those crinoline cages.

The festival showcased period dancing.

The festival showcased also period music.  The favorite composer of the period was Jacques Offenbach.  So, we head a lot of Offenbach during the weekend.
