Today, we learned that fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld died. He has been big in France, very big. So, his death is a big deal for many in France. Susan is sad because his death signals the end of an era where major fashion houses had designers who were in charge, giving the brand its signature look, for decades. Lagerfeld -- at the helm of Chanel for decades-- was one of the last of the grand masters. Most of the other major fashion houses have endured much change in recent years, and have give opportunities to new designers. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
The French news stations have focused their coverage on Lagerfeld, pushing the usual discussion of politics and Gilets Jaunes out of the spotlight.
Karl Lagerfeld has been so important in France that years ago his signature profile appeared on Coke Light cans here. He is really an icon, and was an icon for at least ten years before his death. Where else but France can you find a a fashion designer on a can of soda? We happened to be visiting France at the time (2010) and we kept one for posterity. Here is what it looks like.

P.S. You might remember a Year 2 blog post about Karl Lagerfeld. He was big in Italy as well. You can view the post here.
P.P.S. Shortly after Lagerfeld, Le Figaro published a special edition dedicated to "Le Roi" (the King).
