Eating in Italy #1

Eating in Italy is always a pleasure. We have found many authentic places to dine, especially in Florence.

In the center of Florence, in a very old part of the city, Fiaschetteria Nuvoli is a well-established place to dine with friends.  Nuvoli is a stone's throw from the cathedral and located in a very old building.  The cramped main floor has a few high stools and small counter, plus the kitchen.  That part of the building dates from the 1600's.  The dining room is in the cellar down a steep staircase with a low ceiling.  That part of the building is much older; it dates from the 1300's.  The cellar has low stools around a few long tables, which makes for friendly dining.

The cuisine is very good and very inexpensive.  Susan recently enjoyed ribollita, a typical Tuscan soup made with bread and vegetables, and Greg savored mixed polpette, fried balls made with various ingredients.

According to Nuvoli's website: Just a few steps away from Piazza Duomo, in Piazza dell'Olio, find the "Fiaschetteria Nuvoli". Former canteen of the Archbishopric, this workshop dates back more than two hundred years, when a noble began to sell the wine from the hills around the city. After several generations, in 1986 it came under the management of Benito Nuvoli and then his son Rossano. The tavern is frequented by "the most likeable Florentines, designers and personalities from the world of fashion and film incognito, professionals and adventurous tourists". On the walls hang pictures taken by Rossano's grandfather of celebrities when they visited Florence, including Charlie Chaplin, John F. Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren.

If you visit us in Florence, we will be happy to take you there.
