During our travels in Florence and elsewhere in Italy, we frequently see an edicola. An edicola is a small outdoor shrine, usually set into the wall of a building or sometimes free standing along a roadside.
An noted in an earlier post, an edicola holds a religious artifact, such as a carving or painting. For many centuries, edicola have protected travelers on dangerous streets, provided an opportunity for worship and lighted the way on dark streets.
While exploring Florence, we have collected photographs of many different edicola. Some are centuries old, while others are relatively new in the 20th century. Here are some edicola photos.
