Let's all go to the movies (Sing Street)

Since arriving in NYC, we have enjoyed our membership in the New York Times Film Club.  The Club has provided unique experiences like attending a NYC premiere (Burnt) and viewing films before their release, at a reduced price to boot. 

This week, we attended a screening of the new film Sing Street, a coming of age film set in Dublin and filled with great music from the early 80's along with original music written for the film.  The film, on the surface, is your typical boy gets girl, boy loses girl, . . . .   Below the surface, there is a lot more going on--themes of family, art, bullying, religion, addiction, etc.  We enjoyed the film and recommend it to anyone who likes a good film, anyone who likes 80's music and anyone who likes date movies.  To view the trailer, click here.

After showing the film, a New York Times reporter conducted a live, in-person interview with the director/screenwriter John Carney and the four principal cast members.  It was a treat to hear the director and actors talk about the film and what went into making it.  Plus, at the end of the interview, one of the actors, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, played his guitar and sang two original songs from the film.  The live performance was very good.  While leaving, Susan briefly met one of actors, Mark McKenna.

Greg is wondering if Sing Street might be Broadway bound, like other musical films, such as School of Rock.

P.S.  The soundtrack has some great songs, especially from The Cure and Joe Jackson.  Genesis with Phil Collins is prominently absent.
