Welcome to York

The 10 Year Plan began in New York.

Yesterday, The 10 Year Plan brought us to just plain York.

York is located about 2 hours by train northeast of London and is an ancient town that predates the arrival of the  Romans two thousand years ago.

The York Minster is a large cathedral that dominates the skyline.  We enjoyed a tour led by a knowledgeable and charming guide named Michael.  We learned a lot from Michael, including the fact that the site was once the center of a large fortified Roman town.  Over the millennia, the site has been destroyed, rebuilt, expanded and expanded a few more times.

Here is a photographic tour of the Minster.

•. The façade of the cathedral with its two towers is magnificent.

• The cathedral’s nave is very long (over 300 meters) and wide.

• The stained glass windows of the Minster are also magnificent.

• Greg especially liked the astronomical clock in the Minster.

• Some of the altarpieces were especially artistic.

• The museum underneath the cathedral revealed the building’s history, with Roman architecture deep under the structure, then Norman architecture above and then the cathedral sitting atop everything.  Below is a diagram of the cathedral in relation to the Roman buildings that once occupied the site.

• The ceiling of the adjoining Chapter House is beautifully painted.  Our guide suggested the interior of the entire building may have been as colorfully painted in the past.

Thanks for touring the York Minster with us.
