Watergate Pastry #1

It's time to take a trip in the Wayback Machine to Washington, D.C. in the late 1970's.

Long ago, Susan and her brother Sam both lived and worked in D.C. one hot summer.  Susan worked at NASA Headquarters while Sam worked at Strategic Planning Associates.

Sam discovered a pastry shop at the Watergate.  As a special treat, Sam would visit Watergate Pastry to purchase an inexpensive "end box".  Available only at day's end, an "end box" was a treasure trove of surprises.  It would contain the remnants of pastries that were broken (like eclairs) or sloppily cut (desserts that were sliced into pieces, like Napoleons).  Susan, like Sam, was very fond of the treats in an "end box" and they enjoyed their fair share that summer.

Fast forward to 2018.  Watergate Pastry can still be found at the Watergate.  The same family still owns the shop, and it's still serving delicious pastries.  Susan recently enjoyed a raspberry tart and Greg was transported by a delicious eclair, his favorite pastry from childhood.

Sadly, the shop stopped selling the mouthwatering "end boxes" more than 25 years ago.  Susan asked and was disappointed.  Not to worry.  We'll buy the confections in their unbroken condition.  The shop itself is going strong. Since the Watergate is within easy walking distance from our apartment, we will plan some return visits.

You are welcome to join us.  Together, we can enjoy an Eclair or a Napoleon.
