Our visit to Mt. Etna included two happy surprises.
While traveling to the craters near the summit, we stopped in the town Zafferana Etnea on the lower slope of Mt. Etna. There, we saw a street decorated with a "tapestry of salt gems" (arazzo di gemme di sale).
The street was coated with multi-colored crystals of salt. The salt crystals were the artists' medium to paint a large, brightly colored image on the street: "The value of the family in the Sicilian tradition". It was beautiful. Thankfully, no rain was forecasted.
Later, after visiting the Silvestri Craters, we enjoyed lunch nearby. Following the meal, the parking lot started to fill with vintage cars. We had stumbled across a road rally, the 2017 Giro di Sicilia (Tour of Sicily). The rally is an annual event. In 2017, it was a 4-day, 475-mile jaunt around Sicily, including a visit to Mt. Etna. The vintage cars were a sight to behold.
Our sojourn in Sicily ended with the visit to Mt. Etna. We hope you enjoyed visiting Sicily with us.
We hope to return to Sicily in the future. There is much more to see and experience. Until then--arrivederci.
Arrivederci! |
