Strolling in D.C. #6

While strolling through Georgetown, we stopped in the Four Seasons Hotel for some relief from the August midday heat.

We explored the lobby because we had recently learned that the hotel has a large art collection on display, including some prints of works by Botero, Warhol and other well-known artists.  Check it out.

Fernando Botero is a Colombian artist known for Rubenesque-style of painting and sculpture.  You might remember a post from Year 2 featuring a sculpture The Bird at the entrance to the Florence airport.   We couldn't imagine how The Bird could actually fly.  We had a similar thought about the circus performer featured below.

In the lobby of the Four Seasons, Susan spotted some lovely flowers.

On the facade of the Four Seasons is a bas-relief by artist Raymond Mason.  Try to identify the identify subject matter.  Here is a hint:  The hotel is located in Georgetown, which existed before the establishment of the District of Columbia.

Bas-relief sculpture by Raymond Mason (1988)
Answer:  The sculpture depicts an historical event in Georgetown:  "amidst a swirl of clouds, figures, horses, and muskets, the images of George Washington and Pierre-Charles L’Enfant emerge, evoking the actual meeting of the pair in a Georgetown tavern over the course of several days in March 1791 when the first president of the United States and the French architect worked on designs for the site of the new nation's federal government." Thanks for visiting the Four Seasons Hotel with us.

P.S. Next to the hotel is the Guarisco art gallery which features a bronze sculpture next to the entrance.  With the addition of some random hottie, the scene calls to mind the Three Graces.  Don't you agree?
