A few blocks from our apartment, in an alley, we discovered a mural honoring D.C. native Edward Kennedy Ellington, better known as Duke Ellington.
Duke Ellington by Aniekan Udofia (2012). Former site of 2129 Ida Place, NW, now Ward Place, N.W. |
The mural, painted by well-known D.C. artist Aniekan Udofia, celebrates Duke Ellington as musician, composer and bandleader.
At first, the location of the mural in an alley seemed odd. However, the location is significant. Duke Ellington lived in a house there after he was born, April 29, 1899. Today, the Duke Ellington Building replaces the house that once stood there and the mural honors the birthplace of one of D.C.'s favorite sons.
P.S. "It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing." --Duke Ellington.
