Florence is many cities in one.
One nearly invisible city is ancient Florence during the Roman era. Then, Florence was known as Florentia. (More on that name later.)
About 2070 years ago, some Roman dude thought it would be a good idea to establish a new Roman town where modern Florence now stands. The Roman town of Florentia was a thriving place complete with theater, circus and protective wall. Remnants of Florentia are hard to find. Over 2000 years, buildings are destroyed, buried and dismantled. Some evidence of Florentia, however, is visible.
The other day, while walking home, we practically stumbled over the location of a watch tower of ancient Florentia. In the historic center of Florence, a street is marked showing where the tower once stood guard protecting the eastern wall of the town. Some photos and your own imagination will help tell the story.
