Dining in D.C. #3: Dog Tag Bakery (Part 1 of 2)

When we first heard the name Dog Tag Bakery, we assumed its was one of those specialty bakeries for well-heeled dogs, like Woof Gang Bakery or Bark Avenue Bakery.

Susan visited Dog Tag Bakery, located in Georgetown, when she was collecting donations for our church's charity auction.  She walked in, looked around and asked where were the dogs treats.  The person behind the counter looked quizzically at Susan and asked what she wanted to eat.  As Susan turned bright red, it dawned on her that Dog Tag Bakery served humans, not dogs.  Susan collected herself and asked to speak with the manager.  She talked with the manager about making a donation like the year before and also learned all about Dog Tag Bakery.

The dog tag in the bakery's name refers to metal identification tags worn by soldiers around their necks.  The bakery was established to provide service-disabled veterans with entrepreneurship training through a fellowship program connected with nearby Georgetown University.

According to the website: "Dog Tag Inc. seeks to build a bridge to business employment and a productive civilian life for the veterans and military families that have served our country so well. We provide a transformative opportunity for service-disabled veterans, military spouses, and caregivers through a five-month fellowship, offering an education at Georgetown University and real life work experience in our small business venture, Dog Tag Bakery. Upon completion of our program, our fellows are business ready, competitive and employable."

Since first visiting the bakery, Susan has returned multiple times.  In fact, she missed meeting 44 in person by one day. Susan met her French tutor for a lesson at the bakery the day before Barack Obama and Joe Biden made a surprise visit to the bakery.  No joke.  You can read about here and also check out the photos below.

We recently visited Dog Tag Bakery for an afternoon snack.  Greg enjoyed an excellent cappuccino and Susan and Greg shared a delicious piece of Basil/Mint/Blueberry cake.

Of course, Susan had to sit in the Obama/Biden booth.

Thanks for visiting Dog Tag Bakery with us.
