Strolling in D.C.#4

While strolling in D.C., we sometimes find pieces of history that we didn't know were there.  

One piece of hidden history is the Dean & DeLuca store on M Street in Georgetown (pictured below).

The store sells all sorts of fine foods and wines in what appears to be an old building.  If fact, the building is very old for D.C.

The current building dates from the end of the Civil War.  The building was completed in 1865 and was known as the Georgetown Market, a public market with many stalls that sold all sorts of food--meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, etc.  

The 1865 market was not the first market.  A public market building existed on the site since 1795 and was the first public market in D.C.  Even before the 1795 market, a butcher's shop was located on the site.    

Because of its role in history, the market building has been designated a landmark to be operated as a public market.  Hence, Dean & DeLuca operates in the building today.

While visiting Dean & DeLuca, we discovered something wonderful, a case displaying William Dean chocolates.
