Street Art in DC #2

Here in D.C., unlike in Florence, we have not seen a lot of street art.

Part of the reason is geography.  In D.C., we live in the West End next to Foggy Bottom and Georgetown.  There is hardly any street art in this part of D.C. so we had to seek it out.  We finally found some a long way from our neighborhood.

The Fridge DC is a small gallery devoted to street art and graffiti.  The gallery is located in  Southeast D.C. near Capitol Hill in the Eastern Market neighborhood, an area that was once dangerous and is now trendy.

The gallery is hosting a retrospective devoted to the art of NSF, a group of street and graffiti artists first active in D.C. 25 years ago.  NSF stands for Non Stop Fun and Never Show Faces.

We toured the gallery and snapped a few photos of the artwork.  Enjoy.

The painting above is an homage to Robert De Niro in the film Taxi Driver.  We suppose the painting is called "Are you lookin' at me?"  (We can only guess what Travis is holding behind his back.)

After visiting the gallery, we strolled through the surrounding neighborhood and spotted some outdoor murals, including the two pictured below.

The neighborhood was established long ago.  We spotted a vintage advertisement painted on the side of a building.  Check it out.

Thanks for viewing some D.C. street art with us.
