Monuments: The U.S. Marine Corps Memorial

Just across the Potomac River in Virginia, on a hill overlooking D.C. is the U.S. Marine Corps Memorial. 

The monument was dedicated in 1954 and features the famous scene from Iwo Jima when Marines raised the U.S. flag atop Mt. Surachi following a bloody battle.

On the base of the monument is a list of all of the major actions in which U.S. Marines served.  The list begins with the Revolutionary War, 1775-1783, and ends with Iraq.  We noticed that the Afghanistan and Iraq actions do not have end dates.  

The monument was recently refurbished and looks almost new.  Below is a another photo taken in bright sunlight.  

At the start of Year 3, we drove to Washington, D.C. from North Carolina.  Along the way, we passed by a large building near Quantico, Virginia.  You can see a photo of the building below.   

It turns out that the building is the National Museum of the Marine Corps and the building's shape resembles the Marine Corps Memorial.  Who knew?

P.S.  A while back, Susan noticed in a Washington Post article the name of the head of the Marine Corps, Commandant Robert Neller.  When Susan attended the University of Virginia, she knew a fellow student named Bobby Neller.  Well, it's a small world.  Bobby and Robert are the same person.  From UVA student to top Marine.  Who knew?
