Museums: National Portrait Gallery #1

The National Portrait Gallery, one of the many Smithsonian museums, is home to--you guessed it--a large collection of portraits.  The collection includes paintings of U.S. Presidents and many other notable Americans.

The Portrait Gallery is housed in the Old Patent Office Building, a Greek Revival building started in 1836.

The main entrance of the Old Patent Office Building resembles the Parthenon.
We visited the Portrait Gallery recently and enjoyed viewing the Presidential portraits, including a very recent addition.  Here is a photographic tour of some of the portraits we saw.

The newest addition, pictured below, was unveiled a couple of weeks ago.  Like many paintings, it looks better in person than in a photograph.

In addition to Presidential portraits, the museum is home to paintings of many other Americans.  Here are a couple.

Thanks for visiting the National Portrait Gallery with us.
