Pop Quiz: Green White and Red (Part 2 of 2)

Here is the answer to yesterday's pop quiz.

Answer:  Green, white and red in Florentine religious architecture represent the three theological virtues:
  • Green for hope
  • White for faith
  • Red for charity (divine love)
Did you answer the question correctly?

In the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13, Paul (aka Saul of Tarsus) wrote:  "So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love."

So, Florence's churches are decorated in green, white and red to remind visitors and passersby of what it means to be a good person.

Coincidentally, the flag of Italy is green, white and red.  The colors of the flag probably represent things other than the theological virtues.  Some Italians, however, disagree and instead believe the Italian Tricolore (pictured below) represents the virtues of hope, faith and charity.
