Travels in Italy--Naples (Part 2 of 4)

Our walking tour of Naples included a visit to the Gothic style Church of San Domenico Maggiore (built 1283-1324).   San Domenico Maggiore was established by Dominican friars to honor their founder, St. Dominic.  St. Thomas Aquinas studied and taught here.

Adjacent to San Domenico Maggiore is a square with an tall obelisk, the Spire of St. Dominic.   The spire is topped by a statue of St. Dominic and is known as a "plague column" and was erected after the plague 1656.

The Spire of St. Dominic.  The spire was begun in 1656 and completed in 1737.  The work took 8 decades because work was suspended upon uncovering Roman ruins at the site.  The ruins were studied and preserved.
Of course, after a long walking tour of Naples, dinner was in order.  Since Naples is the home of pizza, we found a local pizzeria and enjoyed authentic and delicious pizza Neapolitan style.

The next day, we enjoyed seeing the very large and picturesque Bay of Naples, the reason why Naples exists.

A view of the Bay of Naples from our hotel.  It was morning and fog shrouded the far side of the bay.  In the foreground, a large car and truck ferry is moored.

Castel dell'Ovo, located along the waterfront to protect the bay and the city.

Fontana del Gigante, along the waterfront
