A Visit to Times Square

Greg's mother Judy paid us a visit recently and we ventured to the Crossroads of the World, Times Square.

Whether day or night, Times Square is always a beehive of activity.  Crowds, cars, super heroes and police officers were everywhere. Eye-catching electronic signs line all sides of Times Square with advertising and news of the hour.

Some fun facts:
  • Name:  Formerly Longacre Square because of the carriage and horse industry located there.  The area was renamed Times Square following the 1904 completion of the New York Times skyscraper located at the south end of the square.
  • Nickname in the 1800's:  Thieves Lair
  • Former Use:  Times Square (long before it was Times Square) was once owned by General John Morin Scott who served under General Washington.  General Scott's large house was located where 43rd Street now runs and the house was surrounded by farmland and horse pastures.
  • Visitors:  about 50 million tourists visit annually (hard to believe)
