From Laurie to Dean

Greetings from New York.

At the end of the last episode, we left our heroine and anti-hero reeling from a Laurie Anderson performance and asking questions like:  What was that all about?, Can art change the world for the better?, and Who knew Hip Hop in Arabic is very, very cool?   P.S.  Laurie, Paul Simon called and wants his song title back, Still Crazy After All These Years.

Upon returning to reality, we broke bread last week with our long-time friend Dean, still living in New York after all these years and happily married.  Dean is an amazing person:  Aside from being very smart, kind, witty and down-to-earth, Dean knows more about culture, fashion and the real New York than most New Yorkers.

Two of the many things we learned from Dean are bargains are everywhere if you just spend the time looking.  For example, you can see every production of the NYC Ballet for only $30 per performance, in the orchestra section, not the nosebleed-inducing 4th ring.

Together with Dean as guide, we visited the Dover Street Market on 30th Street.  DSM has an amazing collection of avant garde fashions some of which are virtually unwearable.  Who knew sleeves and arm holes were optional.

The concept started as a pop-up store in London.  The store was mobbed and switched from pop-up to long-term with new stores added.  Check it out here.  I suppose that is how the Bloomingdale brothers started out in 1872.

We look forward to seeing Dean again.

What does today bring?  Stay tuned.
